How to design a logo
If you want to design a logo, you will probably choose something recognisable, unique and relevant to what you do.
It goes without saying you want your customers to recognise you, and of course you don’t want them to confuse you with someone else. The relevance bit is quite simple – if you’re a nursery school, your relevant logo would be more teddy bear, less post apocalyptic zombie.
We’re surrounded by iconic logos that instantaneously bring to mind a Rolodex of images and emotions specific to the business it badges. Whatever your personal opinion of McDonalds, you can’t see the golden arches without thinking of Big Macs, McNuggets and Ronald of the large, red feet. Coca Cola’s logo promises ice-cold effervescent bubbles exploding on your tongue, a lifestyle choice, or the sign that holidays are coming (holidays are coming). The logos denote consistency of quality, brands you can trust to deliver what they promise.
Designing an original logo is harder than you think. Since the dawn of marketing, artists and designers have used myriad combinations of shapes, fonts and characters and you’ll be challenged to draw something that doesn’t bear more than a passing resemblance to a bigger brand. And how do you get your nursery school to stand out from every other nursery school without resorting to zombie teddy bears?
Your logo has to stand the test of time. When you’re badging your business, you’re investing in the future. It’s true that logos can be successfully refreshed without compromising brand integrity – the BBC updated its acronym by adopting a more modern font, and Apple has a veritable orchard of brand iterations – but the bones of it need to be sound to begin with.
Don’t be tempted to go for something just because it’s cheap. You don’t have to pay through the nose for quality, but it’s worth bearing in mind that when it comes to graphic design, if it is cheap, you can expect it to look cheap. A good graphic designer will provide your logo in several formats too, to ensure your logo looks perfect in any size and you keep the clarity across all your collateral.
