Whilst working at a design agency in Manchester I had the opportunity to work on this gorgeous piece of brochure design for a business called Martin-Baker Aircraft Company. They are the global leader in the design and manufacture of ejection seats and other crashworthy seats for the aviation industry.
They’re also British, family owned company and are proud to have saved over 7,400 aircrew lives to date.
Although Martin-Baker are very well known within the aviation and aerospace industries, there was a perceived lack of awareness beyond this niche market.
They decided to try and raise the profile of the business in order to educate a wider audience. The idea was to to use this book to help create new business opportunities to bring their incredible innovative engineering talents and experience, craftsmanship and unquestionably high standards of quality to other products and markets.
The overall objective was to tell Martin-Baker story and summarise their achievements whilst featuring some key products. This was designed into the brochure design using communicating simple key messages with impactful photography and graphics.
Two photoshoots took place which I art directed. One at the manufacturing plant itself and the second was in a local photographic studio. Martin baker had to transport the election seat we were shooting under cover of darkness and be aware that they could have satellites spying on them.
The brochure design
The brochure design uses two typefaces. Foundry Gridnik as the headline in most instances and Bodoni for the body copy. These were a conscious choice to the messages with the look and feel of both typefaces reinforcing the engineering, standards and proud history of the business.
My favourite part of the design was the cover that features over 800 names of pilots and aircrew Martin Baker’s ejection seats have saved.
The brochure specification had throw-outs to reveal certain features, section sewn and was a 6 colour printed brochure, where each black image was underpinned with a solid Pantone blue. in some cases we had over 400% ink coverage, exceeding Heidelberg’s own print specifications. The final piece looks stunning though.
The print was produced by Galloways Print.
